May 5 - Cinco De Mayo Edition
Last time we checked, the word "partner" meant something involving equality, so is Starbucks going to share its revenue with "partners"?
Happy Cinco De Mayo to those of you who observe this holiday as something beyond an excuse to get shit-faced by White Americans. I’ve been making good progress learning Spanish with Duolingo. This week I hit the 100-day consecutive lesson streak. But I’m also learning Dutch and German. I’m near fluent in German. I was told by some Dutch streamers last week that my basic Dutch pronunciation is pretty good.
Starbucks News
I took the day off from sending out this newsletter yesterday. There weren’t many, if any, new Starbucks stores voting to unionize yesterday, after the flurry of union votes on Monday and Tuesday. Facebook Deliberately Sabotaged Pandemic Responses in Australia
This is breaking news via the Wall Street Journal, but there are new revelations that Facebook blocked health information in Australia in 2021 because it was mad about taxes on news sharing. I’ve written in previous issues about the problems with these taxes.
Workers Are Slacking up a Storm
Good news!
Elon Musk’s Apartheid Roots
The New York Times just discovered that the planet’s richest man may have gotten a boost by being a white kid growing up in apartheid South Africa.
AT&T’s Evil Plans
Evidently, At&T and Comcast are funding the Fraternal Order of Police to badmouth an excellent nominee to the FCC. The police are outright lying about Gigi Sohn.
Department of Democrats Are Just Shitty Republicans Studies
The Democrats only care about unions when it comes time to scare union people into voting for Republicans, I mean, Democrats. Here the U.S. Senate rejects a proposal from Bernie Sanders that tech companies receiving federal aid can’t ban employees from joining unions.
Meanwhile several “Democrats” don’t see climate change as a national emergency.
That’s all for today! See you on Friday!
